Over-firing or under-firing (i.e., not shutting off the kiln when it's reached the planned temperature) can also result in failed pots.

 

How many pots are in the kiln, and how much mass they have can affect the speed at which the firing is completed, and the success of the glazing.

 

Conclusion

These are only some of the myriad pitfalls that must be avoided to achieve the potter’s vision of a functional, finished work. So, when you look at the modest price on that beautiful piece on the pedestal, I hope that you will appreciate not only the skill and time that went into that pot, but all the effort and expense that went into the ones that didn’t make it.
